Hockey Without Boundaries (HWB) Celebrates Completion of Fall Learn to Play Program: A Revival of Passion, Progress, and Purpose
The energy was electric at Aurora’s Wheel Park this Saturday as Hockey Without Boundaries (HWB) wrapped up its revived Learn to Play and Youth Development Camp—a powerful four-week program that reignited a grassroots movement for accessible hockey in Colorado.
What began as a bold idea to bring hockey to every neighborhood—regardless of background, experience, or income—culminated today in cheers, laughter, and proud faces as dozens of young players celebrated their newfound skills and confidence.
“These kids are the definition of growth,” said Alex Quinonez, HWB’s Vice President of Operations and Lead Development Coach. “From the first day, we saw kids who’d never held a stick before learn how to move, pass, shoot, and play together. Today, they played real hockey—fast, smart, and with heart. That’s what this program is all about.”
From First Steps to Full Scrimmages
The Learn to Play journey wasn’t just a series of practices—it was a transformation. Over the course of four Saturdays, participants learned fundamentals of stickhandling, passing, positioning, and teamwork. By the final week, those once timid movements had turned into confident plays during spirited scrimmages that drew cheers from parents and volunteers alike.
What stood out most was the players’ determination. Many came to HWB having never seen a hockey game before. By the end, they were calling out plays, defending their zones, and firing wrist shots like veterans. Not bad for a group of first-time players learning on sneakers, not skates.
Coaches, Mentors, and Role Models
The success of this session can be credited to the dedicated HWB coaching staff, who poured passion, patience, and professionalism into every session. Their energy was matched by the Scooby Snacks Hockey Club, whose players volunteered as mentors, demonstrating skills, setting examples, and inspiring the younger athletes with their own competitive spirit.
“The Scooby Snacks players made a huge impact,” added Quinonez. “The kids looked up to them—they weren’t just showing how to play, they were showing what’s possible if you stick with it.”
Celebration and Next Steps
Saturday’s closing celebration was filled with emotion and excitement. Each player received an Achievement Medal and Certificate, marking not just the end of a camp, but the beginning of a journey. As music played and cameras rolled, players beamed with pride in their HWB camp jerseys, symbolizing more than participation—it symbolized belonging.
Founder and CEO Eddie Delgado reflected on the milestone:
“This program represents what Hockey Without Boundaries stands for—breaking barriers, building confidence, and creating community through the game we love. These kids proved that hockey truly is for everyone.”
With the fall program now complete, HWB shifts its focus to the TOP CHEEZ Swag! Ball Hockey Club and the upcoming 2026 Scholastic Ball Hockey Leagues, expanding opportunities for youth across Aurora to stay active, develop as athletes, and represent their schools in organized competition.
As one proud parent said at the rink, “They didn’t just learn hockey—they found something to belong to.”
